Alice Harwood

Alice studied at Wimbledon Art College and Falmouth College of Arts. In 1997 graduated with 1st class degree in ceramics.

Travel scholarship to India, taught ceramics at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedebad.

Alice has been teaching ceramics at St. Austell College and makes ceramics from her workshop at Trevarno Estate near Helston.

Alice’s work is functional with a contemporary feel. The range is in terracotta covered in a porcelain slip. All her work, produced in small batches, is thrown by hand on the wheel and decorated with slips. Design is simple, functional and with a classic, understated appeal.

Alice says: “In 1998 I received a grant from the Eaton Fund to build a kiln. I had struggled to buy all the equipment I needed to set up my own studio. I had a wheel, clay and lots of ideas, but no way to fire my pots. This donation meant that I could buy the materials needed to build a simple gas-fired kiln. This was a great start and I have exhibited in Cornwall and London.”
